What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic enhances your life by removing interference between the brain and the rest of the body.   These small interferences, called vertebral subluxations, are areas in your spine where the bones have shifted out of place and put pressure on your nerves, preventing you from living life to the fullest.

What is a Vertebral Subluxation?

A Vertebral Subluxation is when one of the twenty-four movable bones in your back, the vertebrae, moves out of its proper position and interferes with the nerve system, the communication system of the body.  This interference disrupts the communication between your brain and your body.

What is so bad about a Vertebral Subluxation?

As stated above, a Vertebral Subluxation disrupts communication between your brain and the rest of your body.  There are messages, traveling up and down your spine, that are literally keeping you alive.  The brain is telling the heart when to beat, the lungs when to breathe, and the brain tells your stomach how much acid to produce so that you can digest your food.  You need clear communication between your brain and the rest of your body so you can function properly.

Vertebral Subluxations affect everyone differently, depending on their location, and how long they have been there. Some people do feel pain, others develop symptoms such as headaches or digestive issues, some people just don’t feel right, but the majority of people have absolutly no symptoms.  They have no idea that they are subluxated!

So, what is so bad about a Vertebral Subluxation?  A Vertebral Subluxation causes the communication system of your body to malfunction.  The brain and the spinal cord control and coordinate EVERY function in your body, from relaxing, to healing, to moving, to digestion.  A Vertebral Subluxation ALWAYS cause your body to function improperly, causing you to function at less than 100%.

Why should people go to a Chiropractor?

Two main reasons: 1. These vertebral subluxations are extremely common in the general population.  2. Chiropractors are the only ones focused on finding and removing them! We want you and your family functioning at your best, and we bet that you do too.

What is Straight Chiropractic?

The “straight” has nothing to do with a person’s sexual orientation.  It refers to a chiropractor who sticks exclusively to chiropractic - finding and removing vertebral subluxations EXCLUSIVLY.

There will be no talk or sales pitches on vitamins, exercise programs, neck braces, massage therapy, etc.  Straight chiropractors realize just how important it is to correct vertebral subluxations, and they choose to spend all of their time doing just that.

Does Chiropractic care hurt?

It should not.  There may be times when the care may be briefly uncomfortable, but this feeling should not last. Dr. Dan and Dr. Kris have always focused on making sure their care is as gentle, yet effective, as possible.

Why do people need to go so often?

There is a universal principle here: All processes take time.  Only on T.V. are there “miracle cures” that take only a second, cost pennies, and last forever.  In real life there needs to be a constant positive effort in order to see positive change.

Take a look at a professional body-builder.  Do they go to the gym one time a year, work out really hard, and then take the rest of the year off?  Of course not!  They go to the gym every day, for hours at a time.

I know most of you are not professional body builders, but the same applies to you.  “Healthy Habits” such as eating right, getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, brushing your teeth, and chiropractic care should all be done on a regular basis to keep you as healthy as possible. To that end, we have many payment options that drastically reduce care, for those who are thinking long term.

Do I need to see a Chiropractor for the rest of my life?

That decision is up to you!  Many people love how they feel and function after they visit their chiropractor. They love this so much, and they understand that they are doing a great thing for their body, so they keep coming and encourage those that they care about to do the same!

How much does care cost?

This is going to depend on several factors – the condition of your spine, how often you need to come in for care, etc.  Feel free to schedule a complimentary consultation with Dr. Dan or Dr. Kris.

How long will the first visit take, and what should I expect?

The first visit will include some paperwork (you can even fill out the forms beforehand to save time) a consultation with the chiropractor, a spinal exam, a digital posture analysis, a brief explanation of chiropractic, and you might be sent out for X-rays, if needed.  It should last about 45 minutes. Click here for more details about your first visit.

Will I have to wait long in the reception area?

We pride ourselves in being very respectful of your time.  Most of our practice members spend very little time in our reception room.

Are Chiropractors real doctors?

Yes, our degree is D.C.  which stands for Doctor OF CHIROPRACTIC.  This means that we can answer just about any question from a chiropractic point of view.

What kind of education do you need to become licensed?

First we need a four-year undergraduate degree, both of us graduated from Stonehill College with a Biology degree.  After regular college, we received our Chiropractic education, which is a five-year doctoral program.

Isn’t Chiropractic just for low back pain or neck pain?

Absolutely not!!!  This is a common viewpoint because many chiropractors have chosen to advertise chiropractic in this manner, but it is leaving out so, so much.  This is like saying that your cell phone is a good paperweight.  That might be true, but your cell phone would serve you much better by sending and receiving calls.  Chiropractic might be effective in allowing the body to get rid of some pain signals, but there is much more to chiropractic than pain relief.  Come into the office and find out what we can do for YOU.

Are either of you available to be a guest speaker?

We would love to talk to any group of people that is interested.  We have a collection of presentations that we are ready to give, see our Extraordinary Living Series for more details. Contact us, and we would be happy to set up a presentation with you.

What is an adjustment?

There are different forms of adjustments.  In general an adjustment is a force that a chiropractor applies to your body in order to remove a Vertebral Subluxation.  Usually, we use our hands to produce a gentle, quick, specific thrust.  We also have very low force techniques, because one size does not fit all.  Many people believe that the adjustment is the “popping” sound but this is not true. The "crack" or sound that is heard means that a bone is moving quickly.  This can happen either when it is moving into or out of its proper position.  Thats why we are so well trained.  We move exactly what needs to move, and no more.

Top of Page

What is that popping/cracking sound?

Picture a suction cup on a window.  Now when the suction cup is quickly pulled off the window, a popping sound is heard.  A vacuum is created, and the air rushes in to fill this vacuum.  Something similar can happen in your body when the adjustment occurs: a small vacuum is created in the space between the bones in your back, the vertebrae, resulting in a temporary influx of synovial fluid (the fluid rushes into the vacuum that we just created between the bones).

Why do infants and little kids need Chiropractic care?

For the same reason that you need Chiropractic care!  They have a spine, a nerve system, and messages traveling up and down their spine keeping them functioning properly.  Any Vertebral Subluxations will also cause them to function at less than 100%, and just as importantly, the bones of their spines are still growing and changing shape for the first 25 years of their lives.  The majority of the shaping takes place within the first 16 years, and then it is "fine-tuned" till you are 25.  It makes even more sense to keep these bones in proper alignment while they are determining their permanent shapes, and the sooner the better!

What are the side effects of Chiropractic?

Some people feel a little discomfort or soreness after being adjusted for the first time.  This is because the body has actually adapted to having these bones in the wrong position. When we help to move them into their proper position, the ligaments, muscles, and tendons have adapted to the improper position, and it takes time to adapt.  During this time, soreness may be expected.

Most people notice an increase in the range of motion of all parts of their spine, decreased symptoms, and a more connected feeling with their body.  In essence, Chiropractic allows your body to work at closer to it’s potential, and your body will work better on all fronts.

When should chiropractic care begin?

The day your child is born.  It is very safe, and it will change their life for the better!  Read more here.

Is it bad to crack your own neck or back?

We get asked this question a lot.  There are two main problems with cracking your own neck/back.

  1. The bone that needs to be moved typically is not the one that moves - Most people crack their neck/back because they are looking for relief/release.  Unfortunately, when they try to move bone B, it is usually bone A or C that moves.  This causes A and C to become hypermobile, or too easy to move, while bone B remains hypomobile, moves too little.  Overall this hyper/hypo mobility cancels each other out, but it wears away at the discs between the bones, producing problems later.
  2. The nerve system travels through these bones - We have no problem when people crack their knuckles, toes, etc in front of us, but when people start doing that with their back, we get concerned.  Traveling down this system of 24 movable bones is your spinal cord, and it is very delicate.  Think of cooked pasta that is the width of your thumb.  That is your spinal cord, and it keeps you alive!  That is why spinal cord injuries are so devistating.  When you crack your back, you can cause a Vertebral Subluxation, a spot where the bones start to interfere with this spinal cord and the nerves branching off of it.  Please leave the adjusting to the professionals!

Most people that are cracking their neck or back are ideal chiropractic candidates, because their body is already telling them that there is something wrong in that area, and a bone needs to be moved.  Give us a call so that we can help get everything in place. 508.230.5056

Can I adjust myself?

Nope.  We are chiropractors and we have to rely on each other to move the proper spinal bone where it needs to go.  Sure, we could move our own neck bones around, and get a nice sound, but because an ajustment is so much more than the sound itself, a true adjustment can only be delivered by a chiropractor working on someone else.

Can spines automatically go back into place?

Great question.  Yes!  If the body receives the proper force, at the proper angle, at the proper time, it can fix its own Vertebral Subluxations.  Your body is constantly trying to remove them, that's why part of our analysis is on what your muscles are doing - stabalizing an area versus moving a specific bone into a different position.

There have been many documented cases of people falling down stairs, getting in accidents, and other traumatic injuries with the end result being that a disease or symptom went away after this traumatic experience.  This is the body using those forces to move the bones into place

Chiropractors deal with the Vertebral Subluxations that your body is not able to handle on its own.
